Simply building lots of links for your target keyword and hoping for the best will not enable you to produce the expected results. If you do, then it is certainly very difficult to say how long those results will last for. Remember that using SEO to get visitors to your website is a long term strategy and it involves not just getting to number one, but when done correctly, staying at number one.
If any of your existing tier 1 indexed links disappear, then your rankings for the keyword in the anchor text of that link will drop, depending upon the ranking power and authority of that link. Same goes for any links in your tier that were once indexed but become dead.
Without analysing the links that you have successfully built, you will in effect be doing SEO blind as you will have no idea why your rankings are going up or down! It also makes the task of building multiple tiers of links far more difficult as you often end up building broken tiers. Regardless of which tool you use, building links on public sites will always lead to link loss over time.
As soon as one of the links at the tier 1 level becomes broken, you are then wasting your time, money, and resources on building links to dead links which don’t impact your rankings. Your tier 2 , 3 and 4 links don’t count when they point to broken links, making any link building strategy which builds links in tiers with automation far less powerful than it actually is.
Focus on your links which are tier 1 with variations of your target keywords in the anchor text. These links are the only connection between your website and the rest of the internet. These should be powered up continuously with more high PR links, to increase their ranking power on your website. The more links you build to your tier 1 links, the greater your rankings will increase in Google.
An indexed tier 1 link is a page which can be found within Google’s search engine index that links to your website. These types of links hold considerable value in ranking terms. If your tier 1 link becomes de-indexed (removed from Google’s search engine), the value that was once being passed to your site will disappear and cause ranking drops for the keyword in the anchor text of that link.
Knowing that Google refresh their entire index once a month, any of your links from any of your tiers can be de-indexed at anytime. This is the importance of performing regular index checks to ensure you only build links to links which are indexed and also plan to replace any lost indexed links.
The keywords which are found in the anchor text of your tier 1 links are the same keywords which your site will rank for. Filtering your tier 1 links by keyword and only building more high pr links to links with the right anchor text that are also indexed will be the most efficient way of increasing your rankings.
Focusing on the exact match variations will be the most effective approach. But any broad and phrase match variations of your target keywords will also have a significant impact on your rankings. Any generic anchor text will help diversify your link profile, but will not help you increase your rankings for target keywords when building more links to these links.
The sole purpose of creating new links is to increase your rankings in the search engines. As new links become indexed, your ranking for the keywords in the anchor text of that tier 1 link will increase. The more powerful the tier 1 link is, the greater the rise in rankings. It therefore follows that if the same powerful tier 1 link becomes dead and is removed by the site owner, your rankings will drop for the very same keyword phrase.
This is the importance of performing regular link checks and a full link analysis across all of your tiers will ensure that you only ever build more links to links which are still alive and impacting your ranking. Building links to dead links is a waste of time and money as it will have zero impact on your rankings.
Links can and will die at any time which is a normal part of doing SEO. When creating new links on other websites, you have no control over when or if they will be removed. The two most common reasons for link removal are:
1. Flagged as spam
2. Domain expires
Performing a full link check on the backlinks you have created before planning new campaigns will enable you to only focus on your live links, making your SEO campaigns far more efficient which can only lead to more rapid increases in rankings.
In order to see the bigger SEO picture, you will need to invest into a sophisticated backlink analysis tool like Backlink Monitor which allows you to quickly analyse your links by tier whilst keeping a permanent check on all of your backlinks which are alive and dead. It will provide all of the necessary SEO metrics such as domain and page PR values, obl’s, anchor text, ip address, indexed status for all of your links across all of your tiers.
Although both types of links will impact your ranking in a positive way, you should understand the difference between the 2 types of links.
A No Follow link will prevent the link juice and authority being passed through to the linking site, preventing page rank from being passed. In ranking terms, a no follow link still has value as it is a link with an individual ip address and is still counted as a vote for your site.
A Do Follow link will pass authority and link juice through to the linking site. Page rank will be passed through the link and will be split equally amongst the number of out bound links (obl’s) on the page. The fewer the obl’s on a page, the greater the value of link juice that will be passed through each link.
When building tier 1 links, both do follow and no follow links will add value to your rankings. When building more links to your tiers, it is far more effective to only build links to your tier 1 do follow links, to pass the authority and link juice through to your site.
